Get Organized the Easy Way (3 of 3)

Hall Closets: Open and Closed

1. Focus on furniture. Don't have an actual closet? A pretty coat tree with a bench can do all the work of one. The piece serves as a decorative accent in an often-forgotten area of the house.

2. Hook it up. A line of pegs is perfect for scarves, purses and coats. If you have a more formal jacket to hang up, put it on a hanger first.

3. Stand-up star. Keep umbrellas tidy in a holder. Seeing them as you leave the house makes it easy to remember to bring one.

4. Stash the small stuff. Little accessories like mittens and hats can junk up your foyer. Use pretty baskets to hold them in one place. You can also assign each member of your family an individual basket to keep personal items separate.

5. The right way to hang. Toss skimpy metal hangers and stock up on heavy-duty wooden or plastic ones that can handle the weight of winter coats.

6. Double up. Short coats waste a lot of space when they're hung up. Install a lower rod for them and use the extra storage space above for more shelves.

Use those hangers you can buy at Ross or Marshalls...the flat ones with the velvet-like material. They are so flat they actually do double your closet space.

From cbob36 to J9Neil: Why stop with socks and underwear. We leave old shirts and trousers as well. We first started this when donations were asked for earthquake victims in Indonesia. On our most recent trip to the Galapagos, the crew on the trip asked fro donations of old clothing. It keeps the luggage weight down and allows for more sourvenirs.

THE OLD LADY JUST ASKED ME TO DO HER SONS CLOSET. I WENT DOWN TO LOWES BOUGHT A CLOSET ORGANIZING RACK SYSTEM WITH ADJUSTABLE SHELVING. I HAVE TO ADMIT IT COST $100.00 BUT WAS WELL WORTH IT. SHE LIKED IT SO MUCH I DID THE OTHER BEDROOM CLOSETS. INSTALLATION WAS EASY ABOUT 40 MINUTES INCLUDING REMOVING THE OLD WOODEN SHELF.

This would work in 1940 when we had less clothes

Nope, I can see the only way to maximize closet space is to get a maximal closet. Therefore, I'm moving. The smallest bedroom in my new house will be my walk-in closet.

YES!

Great advice for nudists, who never have more than ten pieces of clothing.
