Take Your Space from Cluttered to Cute

If your spring cleaning amounts to more than laundry and bathtubs, and you're brave enough to tackle a winter's worth of overstuffed closets, buried desks and disastrous bookcases, you may need a little help.

For eight easy ways to sort things out and make your place sane, check out these smart solutions from professional organizer Jeni Aron, aka the Clutter Cowgirl.

Quick Fixes for Cluttered Spaces

    BASEMENT DESK

Before: This very neglected basement office featured years worth of out-of-date paperwork and who knows what else!

After: We threw out moldy papers, donated dozens of books and gave away a very old computer. The combination of a new rug, artwork, cheerful flowers and none of the mess invites my client to finally be able to work in peace.

    STORAGE SHELVES

Before: This high-traffic area was a mish-mosh of materials, office supplies and unattractive cardboard boxes.

After: By purging unwanted materials and storing the essential items in upbeat, functional containers, this open shelving unit adds new energy to the room!

    BOOKCASE

Before: First we purged all unnecessary papers and donated at least two dozen books.

After: By getting rid of the brown bookshelf and turning the white one on its side, the space completely opens up. The bulletin board lost its outdated reminder notes (which went into file folders) which creates a cleaner look on the wall. A breath of fresh air all around!

    CLOSET

Before: This roomy closet was the No. 1 reason the client rented her apartment. It soon became a stress-inducing and disorganized dumping ground for art supplies, linens, gift wrap and much more.

After: With labeled bins for supplies, the client can easily find all of her belongings in a snap. Plastic bins are cheap, and just a few in the same size gives the whole area polish.

    CLOSET

Before: The right side of the same closet featured more piled-on storage.

After: We added a super-duper peg board for tools and mops -- space-saving and so much more organized.

    DESK

Before: These clients are both artists and have recently moved in together. We spent one session (an Apartment Therapy giveaway) sorting through supplies, artwork, papers, books and equipment.

After: Now in working order with a place for everything, this office/studio can function more harmoniously. We tackled this project in a mere three hours!

    DRESSER DRAWER

Before: Nothing says sexy like an ugly, disorganized underwear drawer.

After: In only 30 minutes, this drawer was purged of pitiful pantyhose, orphaned socks, boring bras and ill-fitting undies. By neatly placing folded items in plastic shoe containers, this drawer is beautiful, orderly and ready for action!

    DESK

Before: This client already had all the supplies we needed to create a streamlined, efficient work environment.

After: We set up her crafts in a side cart and created a zone for supplies by using the vertical room above the desk. We dispelled the client's fear of filing by creating labels and categories that worked for her. Now she has plenty of desk space for all her projects!
