Decorating with White

By GINA PROVENZANO
"WHITE," Donna Karan says, "acts as a backdrop." It can be this blank canvas on which to paint, and often is. It also works wonderfully as the focal point of the picture. When you are working with WHITE as the main event, keep in mind the end result. If the end result you wish to create is modern and clean, minimalism works best, but if softness and romance is your goal, than layering is the way to go. All in all, textures in varying shades add visual interest to the non-color, while shades of WHITE from ivory to pale yellow provide depth. All white in a bath or kitchen is the ultimate is crispness. In the living room it can be open and inviting.

How to use WHITE in your home

Use textured fabrics such as silks, linens, wovens, faux furs, cut velvets and damasks to bring visual interest to a room.

Add tones and shades of white to a room to keep it from looking sterile and cold.

Transparent fabrics arouse feelings of romance and softness.

Paint wood pieces white to lighten up the space and make it appear larger.

A white kitchen is a canvas on which an ever evolving decorating plan can emerge again and again.
