What gardener hasn't lingered over the gorgeous cedar potting benches on display in stores? But at $400 and up, perfection is pricey. Here's a cute, thrifty version, for a garage or basement, that will round up your tools and give you a good workspace -- for less than $100. How to: Mount a section of lattice on a wall; center two adjustable sawhorses in front, and lay a precut Formica counter on top (all available at Home Depot).

The only thing better than a convenient DIY potting station? An easy way to tote supplies outdoors. Use rock climbers' carabiner clips (available at most sporting goods stores) to fasten a canvas tool belt to a plastic bucket. Once outside, detach the belt and wear it around your waist.

Don't overpay for cutesy or clunky storage bins. Media and desk accessories are sleek and cheap, so try repurposing a CD box (for corralling bulbs) or a wire shelf (to keep pots off your work area). Attach to the lattice with hooks or brackets.

Behind this lattice? Two-inch spacers, which lift it off the wall -- leaving room to hang shelves and tools.

Label plants now for speedy ID later. (Tip: Use green for edible, red for non.) Also, stop bugs from sneaking into pot drainage holes by cutting out squares from screens and placing them in pot bottoms.
