You can get a self adhesive net/tape,versus paper tape, and three coats of mud,(three days waiting),a little sanding, and youre there. I do carpentry work, and sometimes that involves anything from foundations to drywall work, and everything in between.I consider myself in the know. haha

Few things that are truly worthwhile can be done in 5 minutes.

home improvement stores do have up to 8x8 inch mesh screen repairs for easy cover up.
remember though if the hole is in a position that the next owner would place a picture or mirror the correct repair is to cut the hole back to the next closest wall studs in a 16x16 inch centered on the vertical wall studs then screwed off with at least
1 1/4 inch screws barely below thewall surface not to go too deep into the paper of the drywall. In this situaton 4 screws on the left and 4screws on the right side should be secure.
Add a few screws also to the area next to the patch for best results.
The rest is cosmetic . use mesh adhesive tape and a couple coats of lightweight easy sand joint compound and sand to your likes. If the wall needs a spray texture then the local hardware store should have a water based spray texture to blend in before painting. good luck!

I believe the information is incomplete about the hole/dent repair. After your first application of joint compound and after the 24 hour dry time almost 9 out of 10 times you will have to reapply the joint comp. due to shrinkage. Also depending on the area you will almost always have to sand

If you are going to repair the problem, do it right - remove the damaged area, cut a small board slightly larger than the hole and using drywall screws, attach it from the back to the undamaged drywall. get a drywall scrap ( you can get scrap dryall at most building supply stores) and screw it to the board. Use joint compound with drywall tape to complete the patch. Hint - if it is a small hole, fill the sides between the patch and wall with caulking to eliminate the need for drywall tape. After it dries, use the joint compound. It is best to sand the compound after it dries, then wipe it with a damp sponge to feather the edges before repainting.

Plaster and drywall are different animals, yet people who write about repairs always seem to allude that they are one and the same. The newspaper trick is for a hole in the wall, and frankly it is a cheap and stupid approach. You can buy kits at the big boxes and paint stores that cost about 5 bucks and will do this job correctly.
Don't even begin to think about doing the newspaper routine.

Spend a little money and get a professional to do it. Then it is done correctly and no frustration! This my dears was written by a woman who has been there and done that. I can also spell when I type.
