Renovation Rescue: The Post-Courtney Love Loft

Architect Luca Andrisani revives a loft from the punk rock aftermath and reveals solutions to preventing and rebounding from remodeling disaster

Renovation Rescue: Post Courtney Love

    Before: The Wide-Open Space

Prior to the remodel, the loft had floor-to-ceiling windows on opposing walls that filled the space with natural light but the homeowner's plans to create a modular space risked creating a cave-like feel. Architect Luca Andrisani was presented with the challenge: How to create rooms without the losing light.

    Post-Renovation

The added framework gives structure and warmth to the old overly-open space. Here, the clanking fireplace crackles quietly, light streams in, and the space is more inviting than Courtney Love would have ever planned.

    Creating Rooms and Keeping Light

Most frequently used rooms were placed on the opposite ends of the loft next to the windows to take advantage of natural light and maintain an open loft feel. The bedroom was also placed next to the windows to take advantage of natural light and maintain an open, airy feel.

Solution to Open but Private Space

Rich wood grain walls are really practical pivot doors. They close to create intimate space and fold back when the owners are craving the open-feel of their loft.

    Clever Shelves

A room divider with peek-a-boo shelves is also an unconventional way to provide natural light to the inner rooms of the loft.

    Over-sized Doorways

The library is a cozy floating modular "room within a room." It was cleverly designed to receive natural light via two spacious doorways. Without feeling confining, the space acts as a hideaway within the larger structure.

    Before and After: Bathroom

A solution to the massive amount of bulky pipes and ducts was to offset the master bath walls so the ceiling wouldn't be too low.

    Before and After: Fireplace

Adding a fan atop the fireplace to improve airflow, then building out the facade was more practical than ripping out the entire fireplace to fix its existing problems.

The renovation of Courtney Love's loft had a few interesting details. The first was the beautiful shape and style of the library's outside entrace wall. It was so end times futuristic, and still classical. The other was the way the fireplace safety issues were dealt with, though I thought the white paint on the panel next to the floor dulled the overall effect of a nice renovation. The furnishings and their colors seemed lifeless and devoid of the effects of personality. Maybe that was the goal of the owner.

I agree with Donnakittie, this story is pointlessly written and nothing more that an advertisement for home selling and remodeling (see wildchild's comment).

Donna is so right. It is just a cheap ploy to make it sound "dirty" because Courtney Love lived there. Most New Yorkers know it was a gorgeous place, a popular building (Lenny Kravitz also has a loft there), and sold for top dollar without difficulty in this housing market. Funny how they don't show any "before" pictures. Most people who buy these overpriced NY lofts do complete "rip outs' and redesigns whether they are needed or not because they have more money then they know what to do with. If the average person saw Love's place, they'd give their left you know what to live there. She's a nut and so an easy target. AOL's "stories" are to journalism what Courtney Love is to "celebrity."

This AOL site is biased because the tag lines about "Celebrity Totally Trashes Loft" is bogus. This real issue here is that AOL hooked us into a story with a false tagline. Love did not "trash" the loft. I hardly believe that Love has the capacity to trash a loft through construction tasks- maybe her contractor? That would have been a more accurate tagline. Get it together AOL.
